I should have spent longer on my homework. I’d read a little about the local area and the view from Mont Vinaigre was recommended as a ‘thing to do’. I’d worked out that I could visit by taking a route from Fréjus, where I was visiting, to my destination, Valbonne, without even going out of my way. What I didn’t know is that Mont Vinaigre is the highest point of the Esterel Massif, at more than 600 metres. Obviously the word Mont gives it away but for some reason I didn’t quite anticipate the obvious drop over the edge of the narrow winding mountain road I was literally shaking creeping slowly up while motorbikes whizzed past on the opposite side of the road. When I reached the top I heaved a massive sigh of relief and made a strong coffee before going for a short hike to look at the breathtaking views across the south of France. At least it was good practice for the Italian mountains to come.
