Albenga, Italy

The medieval lanes of Albenga

If I hadn’t of gone into Albenga at night I would have missed the rotating lumiere style lights turning the stone of the medieval cathedral into a riot of colour, suitably medieval! Albenga is on the western coast of the Italian Riviera, an amazingly well-preserved walled town retaining the ancient Roman structure, with two main streets, the “cardo” and “decumanus” intersecting at the center but very much a 13th century centre, with a myriad of crisscrossing alleyways and tiny streets it does feel like going back to the middle ages. The town has an array of medieval towers, giving Albenga its other name, the city of a hundred towers. It could equally be called the city of hundred passageways and I manged to get totally lost in the ancient lanes, which was quite unsettling in the darkness with just the echo of my footsteps.
