I crossed over to Montenegro in the late afternoon after a morning visit to the site of memory and witness in Shkoder followed by a cheap but fantastic lunch at an out-of-the-way restaurant (see Shkoder post). The border guards decided to do a check of my van so I opened it all up but it was pretty cursory in the end. I think they just wanted to be nosey and seemed curious I was by myself – Something I’ve constantly had, especially in Albania.

My first stop was Ulcinj, attractive with its small old town with an impressive fortifying wall perched on the hill but it was very geared up for summer tourists and all a bit quiet in late February. The portside park up was fab, a massive amount of space, fairly discreet with a sea view. It was, however, one of the windiest nights I’ve experienced and felt like the van was being shaken all night. There were also voices near the van late at night and I realised by tucking myself out the way between some rocks I was actually quite isolated (the picture above is where I moved the van to in the morning). Needless to say I didn’t get a great nights’ sleep!

Next morning, after a look round the town and a short detour up the mountains to get some spring water I went up the coast to Petrovac. It’s a nice little park up behind some closed summer bars and cafes with a quiet and beautiful bay in front. There was one van when I arrived, which left the next morning but as the sun is warm and the sea is gentle I’m not in a hurry. A couple of nights here methinks… then onto Budva and Kotor to see the sights.
